Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party have won the UK General Election and formed a government. The outcome highlights a significant turnaround from the Conservative Party’s majority in 2019, and marks only the fourth change of majority political party in government in the last 50 years. This presents an opportunity for us as an association - to influence change and ensure better for children and young people and EPs.
We will keenly follow the developments and identify key stakeholders and allies in our work for young people, education and mental health. The AEP will continue to campaign for the things that matter to members. We have already successfully engaged with politicians across parties, and will continue contacting newly elected candidates’ offices - to establish new relationships and open avenues for change. We already have several meetings scheduled with MPs across political parties.
We would also like to say thank you to our members, for voting and for sharing the AEP message and building our manifesto in the run up to this election.
This is just the beginning.
We are hopeful that the new government will truly invest in the future wellbeing of children and young people - and recognise the crucial services in our communities, on which this relies.
Before the election, we wrote to all PCCs with our manifesto for England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland to let them know what issues are most important to members and the key changes we need in the education system and the workforce. Now the new government start work, it's our time to make them commit to making change - and making our voices heard.
